Location-based Multi-factor Authentication usually targets a user’s IP address and, if possible, their geo-location. This information can be used to simply block a user’s access if their location information does not match what is specified on a whitelist or it might be used as an additional form of authentication in addition to other factors such as a password or OTP to confirm that user’s identity.
Another approach to Multi factor Authentication that can improve usability while maintaining security involves fine-tuning the TTL (Time to Live) of the different authentication factors. In this case, the user logs on for the first time with two or more factors so that MFA is established from the beginning. If the user continues to use the same browser and a trusted device, however, it may be unnecessary for the user to go through this entire process again for an extended period of time.
